Our Children and Juvenile Coaching Policy

Mission Statement

Kyuzo is a club dedicated to teaching the best qualities of the grappling sports to children of all ages and physical abilities. The club is dedicated to creating young grapplers to excel in the grappling sports of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Submission Wrestling, and to coach the physical and mental benefits of these sports.

We believe that grappling is an ideal combat sport for a child to learn. We believe that the physical benefits such as balance, co-ordination, strength, agility, and flexibility are something every child can benefit from. We also believe that grappling teaches other qualities such as discipline, respect for others, the benefit of hard work, the enjoyment of physical exercise, and team work.

We have several tenets in our coaching which we adhere to:

We Learn Through Playing

We encourage learning through fun games and activities. Kids are constantly challenged through progressively more difficult games that allow them to develop their physical and mental qualities with a smile on their face and a sense of achievement for improvements.

Zero Pressure Environment

We want your child to have a great time every time. Therefore we disallow cheering, coaching, or favouritism from other kids and parents during training. This has been shown in a variety of sports to be the best environment for children to improve their skills.

Sweat is Good!

Your child is going to come home tired every time! They will be performing age-appropriate exercises to improve their balance, agility, strength, and flexibility in every class. They will be constantly challenged and encouraged to improve.

Long Term Development

Every child is different, and some will take longer than others to develop into the great grapplers that they’re going to be. We give them progressively more challenging individual goals rather than expecting every child to conform to a single standard. Our goal is to create good adult competitors with the physical and mental qualities they need. We encourage technique over strength, speed or power- those things come later! We encourage creativity and imagination.

We reward good work, technique, attendance, and good attitude with periodic belt gradings.

Our Discipline Policy

We try hard to encourage good behaviour, but occasionally we do need to discipline a child. We do not hand out push ups or physical exercise as punishments, and we never raise our voices unless we need to be heard. Instead a child who is disruptive will receive a verbal warning in the first instance, and then be put in ‘time out’ for a second instance and will miss out on a game. Any more serious breaches of discipline will be dealt with in conjunction with parents.

Our Child Protection Policy

We voluntarily follow the Guidelines for the Protection of Children in Sport. We coach a tactile sport, but will only make contact with your child between bellybutton and forehead, and between knees and toes. Our Child Protection Officer is Andy Brady (contact details available in reception).
