Great Results from the Premier Championships

Congratulations to Tom Dargle, Rowan Kelly, and Grant Carroll on their medals from last weekend’s Premier Championships.

Grant, Tom, and Rowan with their medals. Aengus (not pictured) completed the representation from our club.

The competition was tough, with 140 competitors from around Ireland taking part in one of Ireland’s toughest competitions to take silverware home from. Aengus O’Corrain was up first for Drysdale Team in the white belt -94kg category, beaten out on points in the first round despite a good performance in his competition debut. Next up was Grant Carroll in the -70kg blue belt class. Grant’s first opponent pulled due to illness and forfeited the match, which meant he went straight to the final. Grant came into the tournament with a stomach muscle tear but decided to compete regardless, and despite a strong performance he was beaten to the gold medal on points by a tough and experienced competitor. Rowan Kelly was up next in the blue -76kg category, and was hoping to improve on his double silver performances in April and May. It wasn’t to be however and he was beaten by triangle choke in the semi final. Despite the disappointment though he rose to the occasion in the 3rd place play-off to beat his opponent in 30 seconds with a brabo choke to bring home a bronze medal. Tom Dargle was disappointed with his division, losing the final by an advantage point for a silver medal, but in the blue belt absolute he went on to defeat 3 opponents, 2 by submission to take home the blue belt masters absolute gold medal. A great achievement for Tom to take home his 3rd gold medal this year.

Overall, despite only fielding 4 competitors this time out, Drysdale Jiu Jitsu Ireland finished 8th in the medal rankings with 16 points. we look forward to higher placings later in the year when we have a larger team competing.

Our thanks to Pedro Bessa/BJJ Cork for their excellently run tournament and hospitality.
