Beginning Martial Arts- Mark’s story

Everyone who starts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has their own story to tell. Sometimes it’s that they had an experience that made them want to defend themselves, other times it’s because they wanted to get fitter, and other times it’s because they watched the UFC and wanted to try out at least one aspect of MMA training. Every story is unique, although we do find that a lot of people have one thing on common- they wait a long time to take the action to start! No one ever seems to see BJJ or MMA for the first time and think “Hey, I’ll ring my local gym tomorrow and get started straight away!” and then immediately do it. Instead, people seem to ponder and mull over beginning for quite a while before taking the leap.

This was certainly the case with Mark, one of our members here.He waited a long time before eventually committing to train here in Kyuzo. “I had thought about starting BJJ for a few years and had looked into joining other gyms but never managed to take the plunge” said Mark, “After speaking to a friend who had been involved in BJJ & MMA for years and had actually run his own MMA gym down the country, he persuaded me to finally give it a go and recommended that Barry would be the best person to train with.”

Mark signed up for our Beginner Brazilian Jiu Jitsu programme, which takes in newcomers on the first of every month. “I signed up for the beginners class on the following Monday and loved it.” Our Beginner BJJ class is unique in that we integrate our Beginner members into the classes with our more experienced members, then separate them when it comes to coaching technique. This allows the Beginners to benefit from the experience of those who have been there longer, and also allows them to feel a part of the team from a very early stage. Mark enjoyed this inclusive atmosphere. “I like that you’re not just stuck in a beginners class but are involved in the main training in the gym and feel a part of the gym from the first day”.

While it’s not by any means compulsory, there is also an opportunity for beginners to stay on after your own beginner level training and roll (spar) with the rest of the crew. Rolling is how BJJ fighters spar. Because there are no strikes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, you can spar almost 100% without fear of being hurt. This is particularly true for more experienced BJJ fighters who have greater control, and these can be your best training partners. Mark wanted to get stuck in straight away, although others prefer to wait a little longer before rolling. “The first class was a little bit daunting because, after the beginner drills, I went rolling with different people who were much more experienced than me”, he said. In fact, for Mark, this was a key reason for his love of Jiu Jitsu. “Rolling is now the most enjoyable part of the class because I find that the best way to learn is to get stuck in with more experienced people.”

Mark’s story is unique to him of course, but the themes are not uncommon to us. From speaking to our members about how they came to join, the first thing we usually hear is “I waited a long time before picking up the phone/emailing you guys”. One of our members first saw us 5 years before biting the bullet to come down to train! Once he did, he was kicking himself that he hadn’t started sooner.

But once you begin training, you’ll never look back. BJJ has so many benefits, and training in Kyuzo isn’t just about fighting, self defence, or fitness. There’s also a great community of people, something Mark noticed immediately. “There is a great atmosphere in Kyuzo. All the lads and ladies are very helpful and give plenty of advice when you’re rolling. After the classes are finished everyone hangs around on the mats and there’s plenty of opportunity to ask Barry or anyone else for advice.”

So why wait? We have beginner BJJ classes 3 times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, and our coaches always love to see new faces.
