A Guide to Our Beginner’s Classes in BJJ/Muay Thai/MMA

One of our most common questions is when to come down to train if you’re a complete novice.

Here’s our timetable, and below, we’ll go through a little explanation of when to come along if you’re a complete beginner and want to try Mixed Martial Arts, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or Muay Thai training.

Kyuzo Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, MMA, and Muay Thai Timetable on January 2018

STEP 1- ARE YOU 15YRS OR OVER?

NO!- Okay, select your age group from the blue classes.

YES!- Excellent. Most classes are open to you to come to, but which one to start in depends on your goals.

I WANT TO START BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU

We have lots of options for the Beginner Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner. The first is to attend one of our BJJ Beginner Courses. This is a really good method of getting going, with slow, detailed instruction in the very basics of BJJ training and technique. This class takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7.15pm. It’s a really great way to get introduced to the sport and art sides of BJJ. The classes are marked Complete Beginner on the timetable.

However we also have a lot of Jiu Jitsu classes marked All Levels. These are classes that are suitable for Complete Beginners too, but which also have people of all levels in them. These are more like training sessions and the techniques and training is adapted to whomever is in the class. This means as a Complete Beginner, you can also train in the afternoon and mornings on Tuesday (10.30am), Thursday (12pm) Saturday (12.30pm) or an extra night’s training on Tuesdays at 7pm.

The only classes you can’t train in as a beginner are those marked Intermediate/Advanced. We teach techniques and do drills that may be over your head a little in these sessions, but after about 6 months of training, you’ll make your way in to these sessions instead of the beginner class.

I WANT TO START MUAY THAI.

Good stuff! Come down to Thursday at 7pm or Saturday at 12.30pm where Coach Dave Gordon will show you the ropes. This is suitable for Complete Beginners, although as with any All Levels class, there are others training in there too.

I WANT TO START MIXED MARTIAL ARTS (MMA)

Our MMA programme is focused on developing martial arts skills in all areas of combat. Stand-up, clinch, and ground. If you wish to learn MMA at Kyuzo, you must train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, and in our MMA class which is wrestling focused. The best fighters are complete martial artists, and our training reflects our belief that skills are more important than “toughness”. We recommend that you do our beginner BJJ classes, our MMA class, and our Muay Thai class.

WHAT ABOUT THE WOMEN’S CLASS?

All of our classes are unisex but we do have a specific women only beginner class on Thursdays at 7pm and Saturdays at 12.30pm for those who wish to begin training with women only. Please contact us in advance as this class has set start dates.

SOME CLASSES SEEM TO START AT THE SAME TIME!

We have a large matted area which we can partition into 3 separate areas running 3 classes.

Hopefully that helps you understand how to get going, but we’d love to get your questions to members@kyuzogym.com
