2012- What a year!

A by no means exhaustive review of Kyuzo’s 2012. Enjoy and if we’re forgetting anything, comment!

January- We reopened for the new year with lots of new faces starting out their new year’s resolutions. No competitions or seminars this early in the year, but we did record a nice video on the Flower Sweep. Check it out [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUD49ywErqk&w=560&h=315]

February- The Beginner class kept growing and growing. Lots of good training this month including a week long training camp with our friend Nivaldo Oliveira. He took some time out to steal Martin’s UFC belt.

nil ufcIn March we sent a team to the Irish Open and returned with a lot of medals and some great performances, including double gold for Adam and Nathan in the Junior section. This was also the first time our Kids team competed.

Friends before battleIn April, we were delighted to host and compete at Grapplepalooza. Again we took home a shelf load of medals and had great performances all round.

Grapplepalooza 2012 - AdamTeam DrysdaleIn May we welcomed one of the best grapplers in the world to Kyuzo for our official gym opening (and one year birthday under our new name). Dean Lister was great fun and coached a really enjoyable seminar.

amandahandraisedWe were pretty busy in May, travelling the short distance to the Irish Cup where we picked up some more medals.

And in June, Grant Carroll successfully returned to MMA with an armbar victory at Cage Gods

In June we also welcomed, in conjunction with our friends from Royal Grappling Academy and team Ryano, world famous BJJ master Robson Moura to the gym. Robson taught a great seminar!

June also saw us head to the Munster Open in Cork City, held by our friends in Pedro Bessa/BJJ Cork (Liam runs a fantastic Academy in McCurtin Street in the city there that you should check out if you’re in the rebel county) Again we had some good results!

In July, we hosted our head coach Robert Drysdale for a brilliant 3 day training camp in the gym. People traveled from far and wide to come and train with Robert and there were lots of great techniques taught over the weekend… and some very tough training! Our coach Barry received his brown belt this same weekend too, a major step for the gym.

In September, Grant competed again, putting in a great first round performance at Battlezone 5, but unfortunately an injured arm meant his second round performance couldn’t match the pace of his first round one. Shafty will be back in 2013!

Here’s another nice story from September, no medals in this one but something else good!

In October we took on board Viktor and Laszlo as our official wrestling coaches, running training twice per week and starting a new wrestling club out of Kyuzo that is going to be a huge success in 2013. We also recorded a nice video for the people at home!

November was a great month for us competitively as we took home plenty of silverware from Grapplepalooza. This was a huge tournament that all of the guys in the gym helped to run. Lots of golds, silvers, and bronzes for Kyuzo that day, but very few photos as we were too busy running the show!

Nathan did get to meet Mike Fowler there though...

We then were lucky to host Mike Fowler, who had won a superfight at Grapplepalooza, for a seminar that same week. Mike taught some great stuff and we enjoyed the seminar a lot.

That brings us to December, traditionally a quiet month on the year, but this year we decided to run a charity grappling seminar for Aware. It was a great success and we were delighted to see so many people coming along on a cold December Saturday and enjoying what we had to offer.

The year isn’t quite over. On Wednesday night we have our in-house tournament, the Baldies in the gym will take on the hairier folk, and the children’s Christmas class takes place on the same night. We have had a great year, our most successful to date and we’re looking forward to 2013 with great excitement for the future. The club is growing at a brilliant rate, and we’ve got lots planned for the New Year on every front.

Next year, Kyuzo will be one decade old. we’ll be celebrating 10 years of coaching and training. We’ve always been here, in the Finglas/Glasnevin area and are pretty much bordering on a local institution now. We’d like some suggestions on how to celebrate- it’s not often something like this comes along!

Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year to all our members!
